“I was impressed and moved by the maturity, resonance, clarity, depth and tone….”
“…all the right players in exactly the right place at the right time. It was perfection.”
“I bounced out of the hall giddy with the infectious joy of your “Don’t Stop Believin’…”
“That performance was superb…”
Glowing comments — some from directors of other choruses — followed the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus’ July performance at a quadrennial choral festival featuring 130 choruses and ensembles from around the world.
The AGMC and its Panache select ensemble were prominently featured at the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses2012 GALA Festival. With more than 6,000 delegates and performances over multiple days in three venues, the 2012 festival was the largest in the event’s 30-year history.
Panache made its first GALA appearance as one of the festival’s opening performances. The full chorus had the honor with San Francisco and Boston of being in the festival’s also-coveted closing slot.
The AGMC did Atlanta proud with its typical quality performing and musical variety. Songs ranged from the gospel “Hark I Hear” to the heart-tugging Matthew Shepard memorial, “ What Matters,” and Broadway’s “Song of Purple Summer.”
The six-song set ended with “Don’t Stop Believin’ “ which featured the entire chorus performing choreography created specifically for the Denver performance. The movements, along with the precise vocalization displayed throughout the songs, brought the audience to its feet for multiple standing ovations. The men were greeted by cheers as they made their way from the Opera Hall in Denver.
Atlanta was also ably represented by the rich, nuanced performance of our sister/brother chorus, OurSong, led by founding Artistic Director Dr. Robert Glor.Earlier this summer, OurSong released its latest CD, “Voices of Earth,” which is available through its website or Apple’s iTunes Store.
Like the Olympics, GALA festivals are staged every four years. In 2016, it’ll be a safe bet that the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus (and no doubt OurSong) will be there!
