The grandeur of The Cathedral of St. Philip a perfect accompaniment to glorious sounds of the season
October 28, 2014 — The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus will celebrate the holidays and the gifts of the season at the AGMC’s 34th annual holiday concert, Tied up with Strings. The 2014 edition of this beloved annual event will be presented Friday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 6 at both 2 and 8 p.m. in the concert’s long-time home, The Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta’s Buckhead community.
Since the late 1990s, the AGMC’s annual holiday concert has been presented amidst the splendor of The Cathedral of St. Philip, the largest Episcopal cathedral in the South. Located at 2744 Peachtree Road NW, the Cathedral continues to be a perfect venue for this moving and joyous holiday event that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has deemed a “Weekend’s Best Bet” for years.
“We consider The Cathedral itself one of the recurring ‘guest stars’ of our holiday concert,” said Kevin Robison, artistic director of the chorus’ Voices of Note umbrella organization and now in his eighth year as the AGMC’s conductor. “Its reverent beauty and ringing acoustics greatly add to the experience for both our audiences and the chorus itself. We feel extremely privileged to be invited back year after year.”
HOLIDAY FAVORITES ‘TIED UP’ WITH STRINGS
Apt to the concert’s title, unique to this year’s performances is the string quartet accompaniment that will support the choruses through this festive and varied program. Featuring new and popular arrangements of traditional holiday carols such as “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,” “Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head,” and “Fum, Fum, Fum,” to popular tunes such as “Grown-Up Christmas List” and a medley from the movie classic Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, the concert selections will appeal to the entire family. Two settings of the Jewish folk song “Hine Ma Tov” will be showcased, and the focal point of the concert will be a new setting of the “Gloria” text by composer Craig Courtney.
“The concert at The Cathedral is our annual holiday ‘gift’ to the community,” Robison said. “We welcome new and returning audience members to enjoy these special performances with the dedicated and talented 100 men of the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus who so enjoy presenting them to you.”
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
As in years past, this holiday concert’s Saturday matinee performance will be followed by a free ice cream social, making it a special and fun event for all ages. The ice cream social is again graciously provided by the Zweifel Law Firm and Peachtree Battle Chiropractic.
Individual tickets for Tied up with Strings are available now through the Voices of Note website.
Season subscriptions to all performances by the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus and Atlanta Women’s Chorus, as well as chorus-specific subscriptions, are also available. Season subscribers receive premium seating and the best value on their purchase.
